Spirit of an Activist tells the story of Mokah Jasmine-Johnson from her early days as a Jamaican immigrant in the U.S. to her recent work in building the Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement in response to racial injustices in her hometown and nationwide. Part survival manual, part manifesto for the examined life, part biography, Spirit of an Activist is, above all, an honest and searching book that will inspire readers to actualize their potential as citizens during these desperate and politically fraught times. Mokah’s is the voice of wisdom and experience, leadership and love, with a parting message that we are all bound together as neighbors, no matter our differences.

  1. Debra Brenner

Reading the “Spirit of an Activist: Stop sitting on the Sidelines” was like an adventure. I felt as if Mokah was right next to me telling me the stories contained in her book. I learned so much about her own experiences as well as the developments that have occurred in Athens, GA, a city I have lived in for over 30 years. She brings to light what truly needs to be done in order to make the changes necessary to make our great city focus and attend to the changes necessary regarding racial discrimination and systemic social justice.

In her book, she outlines a 30 Day-Challenge that the reader can address within the safety of their own lives. The challenge can be taken on many different levels, depending upon where the reader is in his or her own journey. It encourages one to learn. She says, “Open your mind and seek the truth.” Perhaps when you have safely googled “terms such as racial capitalism, or Jim Crow laws or research the impact that slavery has had on our society,” you may be ready to understand and “seek ways ….to be part of the solution and not the problem.” She encourages her readers to “step outside your comfort zone and take the time to learn more about different cultures.” Her suggestions include attending a festival, eating at a cultural restaurant, starting up a conversation with someone outside your circle of friends. These are easy ways to begin your process of becoming part of the solution that Mokah encourages us all to do.

I hope you will decide to read this book. It may be your first step towards being part of the solution.
